Shawnee Tales
July 2019
by Lin Romberg
A couple of great pictures were sent in - a Dutch Girl and a blue humidor with decals of the same - really pretty pieces - purchased within days of each other from different sellers. Humidors originally came with a rubber seal but are seldom found with them today!
Our seller of doctored hairys and bugs keeps relisting them - so relieved no one is jumping in to purchases them - hope we are educating buyers. Getting burned on jars like this will have a newbie collector stop collecting. I have always felt it is better to over pay on a much desired piece and be assured it is vintage and authentic.
On Facebook the Shawnee auction has been slow to take of but a collector listed a blue bib Smiley with a full toupee - not many authentic blue bibs with hair but this is from a long time collectors collection and I trust their knowledge of the pottery that it is authentic. The auction will have closed by the time the newsletter posts but will be interesting to see what it brings.
A long time collector sent in a stunning array of Dutch photos - both Jill and Jacks - most of us will never see any of these in person - beautiful assortment of hand painted flowers, unusual decoration. Hand painted flowers to cover up blemishes - beautiful stencil decor - hand painted pocket on one of the Jills. So appreciative of these pictures being shared with all of us.
Pottery Festival is coming up this month - hope anyone attending will send in some information on the activities and finds.
A really nice find was a goose lamp with the original shade in excellent condition - so hard to find with shades considering these pieces are sixty plus years old at the very least. A local shop has the Victorian couple lamps, the double couple, both identical for ten dollars each - no shade - both are the same couple as shown on Pam Currans book page 247 bottom center. I don't collect the lamps but would be glad to pick these or one of them up for anyone interested. Among collectors years back they were often referred to as George and Martha!
Would love to see other pics if anyone has original shades with their lamps - please send us some pictures.
The other day I was watching Who Do You Think you Are - the person investigating her ancestry was Molly Ringwald and on the video were several pieces of Shawnee in the background. I had to rewind to see them all - elephant creamers, Tom Tom Teapot, down by the branch of the tree just above her Dad's hand is a Smiley milk pitcher. Not often we see pieces on film. This family photo was from when she was a child - makes me wonder if the family has these pieces still and/or any other pieces!
Until next month.
