Shawnee Tales
Sept 2019
by Lin Romberg
Several contributions this month - we so appreciate participation from our readers!!!!
A couple of pictures as to displaying pottery around our homes and yard.

Also a picture taken at the Indiana State Fair today. Two Shawnee jars entered in the kitchenware cookie jar selection. Not winners, but bet the judges were paid off. Lol!

Several months ago a collector sent in pictures of the watering birds - I had never seen any in person and didn't get very many responses from readers as to identifying them - well, the collector sent in information that they are shown in Bev and Jim Mangus Shawnee guide. Wondering if Bev and Jim are following the newsletter - LOL - hello!!!!!
Back to the subject of our watering birds. You and some of the other collectors were learning towards another marker other than Shawnee for these watering birds. We did find this in the Jim and Bev Mangus book..see pics. Do you feel that this is still another maker? I'm still confused... thanks !
Some Valencia - we just never know what is out there!

"A Valencia vase found this summer... Crazy glaze issues. Couldn't pass it up!"
AND a listing for an unusual teapot - picture from the listing and then one from the collectors own collection with a beautiful label still affixed.
Not related to this but on Facebook someone posted pictures of lidless vintage teapots hanging from branches of a tree by the handle for birds to make a nest - if I had not removed my fruit trees, I would try this to see if any birds would make their home in them - has anyone tried this?????
Looking forward to Fall - this has been a brutally hot summer here in Arizona!
Until next month.

I found this watering bird on Ebay. The most info I've seen on watering birds.

Ole Week-end Willie -
"Vintage 1950s Holt Howard plant watering moisture bird Week-end Willie with box This is “Week-end Willie – the Moisture Bird” from the 1950s era. As the box indicates, it is from Holt Howard Associates, New York City. Willie (including stem) is approximately 6 ¼” long. It is unused, with no chips, cracks or repairs. It does have some typical crazing. It is in its original box. The box has some wear, mostly on the sides corners and edges."
The jars below were found on Marketplace.
